Swiss firm Georg Utz plans expansion near Edinburgh, Indiana

Georg Utz, Inc., a Switzerland-based plastic container manufacturer with operations at 8 locations on 3 continents, will spend $11.8 million to expand its 168,000 square foot manufacturing facility in Bartholomew County, Indiana, by 135,500 square feet, according to the company’s local incentive application.  The manufacturer will also install $7.5 million in new equipment, for a total investment of $19.3 million.

Georg Utz established its first US operations in Columbus, Indiana, in 2003.  It quickly outgrew its initial facility, and built a new facility in 2009 at its current location near Edinburgh, Indiana, at the northern part of the Columbus, Indiana MSA.

The company plans to retain its 108 current jobs, as well as add another 46 permanent jobs with an average wage of $25.13 per hour, by the end of 2022.  In support of the company’s investment and job creation plans, Greater Columbus Indiana EDC requested that Bartholomew County government approve a ten-year tax phase-in (abatement) on Real Property taxes and a five-year phase-in on Personal Property taxes, approved July 13, 2021.  Greater Columbus EDC has also asked the Indiana Economic Development Corporation to support the company’s growth with State incentives.

“Georg Utz is a wonderful employer in our region and supporting the growth of existing companies with incentive support is as important to us as welcoming new companies to our region,” said Jason Hester, president, Greater Columbus Indiana EDC.
